Scarlet Rae
ARTIST BIO
Los Angeles born and Brooklyn based Scarlet Rae has been performing and releasing music since she was 15-years old. By high school, Rae was fronting the indie folk band Rose Dorn, who became favorites in the Los Angeles DIY circuit, and the trio’s sepia tinted debut, Days You Were Leaving, was issued by Bar None Records in 2019. A move from California to Brooklyn in 2020 enabled Rae to creatively refresh. Lower rents and the introversion provided by Covid-19 lockdowns led her to begin focusing on material she hadn’t had the time to pursue while occupied with Rose Dorn.
Her early singles under the Scarlet Rae name have allowed her to build her musical community in the city and around the US, gaining the co-sign of and making videos with Surf Gang, playing as a live member of bar italia, and sharing stages with the likes of fantasy of a broken heart, Sedona, Winter, Bloomsday, and CFCF.
“Bleu” borrows its title from part of Scarlet's sister's name. An honest homage to her late sibling, it aims to convey Rae’s emotions as she watched her grapple with a period of difficulty. Rae’s lyrics are filtered through the numbness of dissociation, colored with layers of burbling AutoTune. Resonate strums and buzzy synths paint a thorny sonic backdrop. “Bleu” came together fluidly as a home recording, and was mixed and mastered by Rae’s current bassist Harry Teardrop.
